Optimus Prime Cake

My three year old son loves transformers so I wanted to do a really cool cake for him. Well sometimes I will go into a store and purchase the cake toppers so I can make my own cake and frosting but the kids can still get the little toys but they only have one kind and it was really lame so I decided to put a little more work into it this time. So I searched for transformers and found a really cool picture of optimus prime transforming from the big rig form into his robot form and reversed the image on my computer and had it blown up at staples (costs less than a dollar)then I taped a piece of wax paper onto the picture and traced an outline which I then colored in. The whole time I used various round tips to do the outlining and the coloring. The frosting tends to shrink though when it dries so you have to keep going back and coloring in. To do the actual transforming part I got a wet paint brush with and just blended the various colors together to connect the two images together. to make the image look smooth on the other side when the frosting has dried a little just press on it with a spoon or even your fingers.

I used four cake mixes and made my own chocolate mousse filling. I only have 13″x9″ cake pan so I put the two together and “floated out” the edge (as my husband likes to say)so you couldn’t tell that I had to piece together the cakes.

Note: save the cake tops in case the cakes don’t line up evenly (if you have to do what I did) so you can prop them up evenly between layers, no will know, trust me! Also try not to move the cake once image is on, it may crack like mine did, you can see it in photo…

Then when it was time to put the image on the cake transfer was easy, you just put the image frosting side down and slowly peel back wax paper.
