My son is a fanatic about penguins. For his 10th Birthday I wanted to surprise him.
This is the first full bird cake I have tried. I searched several stores for a penguin shaped cake pan to no avail so I shaped the top corners of the cake pan with aluminum foil before adding the batter.
The batter was simply that of a yellow cake mix out of a box. I made the cake a few days before and then froze it before I iced it as an attempt to keep the crumbs in the icing to a minimum.
The detail is all done in traditional butter icing with a basic spatula and a sandwich bag with the corner cut off.
The challenge was to minimize the black icing as it?s taste is too dominant and not really pleasant.
I put the finished cake on an aluminum foil lined cookie sheet covered in loose powdered sugar, and then added miniature marshmallows for snow.
He loved this cake and is already asking what I am going to do this year.
To person in SC, I have been looking for direction on a Penguin cake pan, etc…and your posting was super helpful. Thank you so much.
