This was from a while back. My husband is a massive rugby fan and since I have started baking fun cakes for my 2 boys for their birthdays, he didn’t want to miss out! So I decided to make him a rugby ball cake.
We have quite a few rugby balls at home so I had one on the table as reference. I printed some alphabet stencils and cut them out on black fondant. I then used some red fondant to make the English rose (husband is English!). I used my usual banana cake recipe. I baked two banana chocolate cakes using a rectangular shaped tin. Ingredients:
- 4oz butter or margarine
- 6oz sugar
- 2 eggs
- 2 big bananas
- 8oz self-raising flour
I mashed the bananas. Creamed the butter and sugar together and mixed in the eggs. Then mixed together the two yellow sludges, and the flour. I added about 1 tsp of cocoa powder to give it a bit more flavor. Scraped the mixture into the tins and baked for about 50-60 minutes each.
I cut out a picture of a rugby ball so I can cut the cake into the required shape. Then I used the 2nd cake to build on top to make the right shape. It took a while to get it right. Then I covered it with white fondant. The details took a while. Then I stuck his name and added the red stripe which took a few goes to get right as the ball curves round. Then the rose and the blue stripe. Then I covered the base with green fondant as grass and added some edible daisies. Husband was impressed!
