For my granddaughter Madelyn’s 4th birthday, she requested a pink & green camo cake! Her favorite colors are pink & green. I wrestled with the idea of how in the world to do this, as I had only seen one other cake done in pink camo and it was not exactly what we wanted.
Then I thought of using ribbon to wrap the diameter of the cake. Had trouble finding ribbon, but I did find pink camo fabric with lime green frogs. (Madelyn loves frogs, too!) So I made a 3 layer chocolate cake and covered that in decorator icing tinted pink and trimmed it in green, placing it on one end of a rectangular hot pink plastic tray I found at a dollar store. I washed my fabric and trimmed a strip wide enough to fit the cake and simply ironed the edges under and placed it around the cake, using large straight pins to pin it to the cake. On the other end of the tray, using blue icing, I formed a “pond”.
I had a couple of plastic frogs to put into the pond, but wanted one that looked as tho he was “diving in”. Using fondant that I tinted green, I used the plastic frogs as my model and made a frog with hands reaching out as if he were about to dive in. I also tinted some fondant a kind of brownish grey, and made “rocks” to go around the bank of the pond, and made one large rock to sit my diver on. I placed the rocks and diver around the pond, and used some jelly beans for extra rocks.
To make the lilly pads, I took some of the green fondant left over from the frog, and made little circles, and cut a slit in each, placing them in the water. Using the pink decorator icing, I made small flowers, then dabbed a little yellow in the center of each. I then used a small leaf tip to make ferns that appeared to be growing around the rocks.
All in all, it turned out pretty good I think. The main thing is Madelyn just LOVED IT! I had a lot of fun making it, as I do every year. Now, I just wonder what she will ask for next year?
Thanks for letting me share!
