Using my son’s Playmobile pirate ship as a model I made this pirate ship cake for my son’s fourth birthday. The cake was made from a boxed mix enough for two 9X13 cakes. The ship was built in pieces freehand, the base was cut out of one 9X13 sheet. the scraps made up the bow and second tier sides of the ship. Cutting the second cake helped to create the back of the ship. (There was plenty of cake leftover.)
All pieces were “glued” together with chocolate store-bought frosting. Finishing details used were decorating icing in orange, white and blue pretzel rods for the masts with paper flags stuck on with icing square pretzels for the windows of the back of the ship and gummy fish and other sea creatures to swim in the “ocean” cake board.
My son had plenty of pirate figures around the house so they became the characters used on the ship cake. It was heartbreaking to cut this one up after we sang Happy Birthday but my son loved it and is still talking about the pirate ship cake a year later!

My daughter-in-law never ceases to amaze me. This cake is only one of many she has created for my grandson’s birthday. I don’t know how she can top this but each year they get better. Great going, Lisa.
