Pirate Ship Cake

I made this pirate ship cake for my son’s 4th Pirate Birthday Extravaganza. I spent a lot of time reading about the other pirate ships on this website. All the entries were truly helpful.

I started with a chocolate scratch cake base that made two 9×13″ cakes. Then I used a box mix for two 8×8 cakes. I layered the two 9×13 after refrigerating them for a few hours with butter cream frosting in between. Then I put it in the freezer for a hour and put it back in the fridge. The two 8×8, put in fridge first.

Assemble: I laid out the two big 9×13 on the board and cut the 8×8 cakes in halves(4). I layered two halves in front for the bow, sliced off the sides to create triangles, then flipped the triangles and put them on the top bow to create height. For the back I layered two halves of the 8×8 with butter cream to create more height. I put in fridge for hours. I highly recommend freezing before shaping cake.

I used my son’s pirate ship and lots of ideas from this website with pirate cakes to carve the ship and give it a “real” ship look, and get decorating details. I covered the cake in chocolate butter cream and added extra thick bakers fudge supreme to give it a darker look. I used skewers to create the look of wood on the sides. I used yellow frosting to highlight the curves of the ship and add depth. I used long chocolate wafer cookies for the sides of the ship and regular wafers for the windows. I kept it in the fridge until we had to leave.

I assembled the cake at the party site with the pirate kit pieces;mast, cannon, pirates, etc….

The cake feeds about 40 and weighed about 15 pounds. Most said it looked like the “Black Pearl” from the movie being the same color.

  1. Very cute cake … certainly the focal point of the party, following the theme to a T. I’m sure Matthew enjoyed showing off his birthday cake to all his friends. This will be a birthday cake he will remember forever.

  3. What a detailed cake, it’s almost a shame to have to eat it! Great description…someone who knows what they’re doing might actually be able to do one too! (Not me). Great job.
