My daughter requested a castle cake and this site helped a bunch! I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a fancy kit. I used Duncan Heinz chocolate cake mixes and made two 9x13s and two 8 inch rounds. I let the cakes cool, then wrapped and froze them overnight. The next day, I whipped up two batches of Wilton recipe frosting and assembled the cake. I didn’t used dowels or straws or anything else to stabilize them… they worked just fine. I melted apricot jam in the microwave and painted it onto six sugar cones. I then dusted each one with purple edible glitter. After they dried, I inserted each one into the tops of cake cones upside down, securing them with frosting. I piped white frosting around the base and the joints. I cut out flags from cardstock, taped them to toothpicks, and inserted them in to the tops of the cones with a dab of frosting. After assembling the cake, I frosted it with purple tinted frosting, then inserted cones into the four corners of the 9×13 cake (I scooped out part of the cake for this). I did the same thing with two cones on top. I finished the cake with easter colored m&ms, a “4” candle, and a hershey bar door. My daughter loved it and the guests did too… We’re planning a carnival themed party for my daughter’s fifth birthday next week but she wants the exact same cake as last year! I guess since it’s her birthday…
