I made this Thomas the Train cake for my sons 4th Birthday, he is a huge Thomas the Train fan. I made 3 different flavor cakes, I let him pick the flavors, and then baked them in 2 13×9 pans, and 2 9in round cake pans.
So after the cakes were completely cooled, I cut out the pieces, put it together, kind of like a puzzle, but I did not put the face on yet. Frost the whole thing with the buttercream frosting. I used fondant frosting on top, and I know that fondant has a bad rep for tasting awful, but I found this great recipe called MM Fondant, made from marshmallow frosting, and it actually tasted very good, all the kids loved it and so did the adults.
The buttercream recipe on this site is also fabulous. Fondant is very easy to work with once you get the hang of it. If you would like to try using fondant, I suggest use a kitchen aid stand up mixer if you have one. Just grease the bowel and the bread hook really well. Presift the sugar before adding it to the bowl. I made 3 batches of it, just to be safe, and that was way too much for the cake. I suggest 2 at the most for this cake.
After you get the fondant made, color it according to the recipe, adding more to get the correct color, this is what takes a lot of time. This was a huge hit at the party, and well worth the time.
