TMNT Birthday Cake

I made this Teenage Mutant Ninja turtle cake for my son’s birthday party. I ended up baking two 8″ rounds and stacking them with green dyed buttercream frosting in between. I did a crumb coat and set the cake in the fridge.

Now for the fondant. I made homemade marshmallow fondant and dyed each color I needed by hand. I rolled out white and covered the cake. It took me a few tries to get it not to stick to the table and then not rip a whole in it as I was smoothing it on the cake. Ended up taking me about 40 minutes just to cover the cake. Frustrating at the time but a bit funny now.

Next I took my son’s toys and used as a guide for each face. I added the fondant bandannas and set them on the cake. I wanted the cake to look like a pizza so I took left over white and orange fondant and grated it on my cheese grater to make the cheese. Next I rolled out red and cut with my donut hole center from donut cutters to make pepperoni.

At first they didn’t look right so I painted them with red food coloring and water. I then made the crust by taking brown food coloring gel and water as a watercolor and painted the whole outside of the cake. The cake took 8 hours in all but totally worth it. I surprised my son. As I showed him his cake he actually slipped to his knees saying how totally awesome it was and how excited he was to show his friends. We brought it to the bowling alley and got people from other birthday parties coming over and looking at it and couldn’t believe that I had made it myself! It was a proud moment for me but nothing compared to my son’s reaction of excitement and happiness. I will never forget that day!
