After changing his mind several times, our now 4 year old decided on a ninja turtle cake for his birthday.
We have the old Wilton pan that we’ve used before, but I wanted something different. I love the more realistic, aggressive looking ninja turtles over the cartoon and found a couple of reference images online. I molded the base out of Rice Krispy Treats, and then sculpted the head out of a cake box mix with a package of chocolate pudding mixed in from 2 – 8″ round pans and 1 half-dome pan.
After a little more carving and molding, I covered the whole thing with a layer of buttercream and let it sit in the fridge for a while.
Then I wrapped it in homemade marshmallow fondant.
I scratched up the surface for a battle-worn texture, and then painted on some details and dabbed with a paper towel to make it more realistic looking.
The kids loved it and it tasted great.
