I began with a standard 11×15 sheet and a photo of the rail engine that George is engineer on. His mother asked for something that would commemorate not just that he was 50 years old, but also included his profession and lifelong love of the railroad.
I incorporated an actual photo of George ‘standing’ on the deck at the front, where she so often saw him.T he number on the CP rail is his usual run.
To make the train cake, I enlarged the photo of the rail engine, then hand drew the details on the cake, trying to keep proportion (okay.. so not the best). I tried to keep the rail car in proportion to George’s photo, which made it a bit difficult for the size of the cake. Next time, I’ll use a grid system for anything similar.
The ‘sand’ around the rails and grass is brown sugar. I used my standard buttercream icing recipe and Wilton tips.
