Train Cake

My sister in law asked me to make a cake for my nephew’s 2nd birthday. She suggested a train and left the rest up to me. SO, I looked up as many photos to get ideas as I could. (There are so many cool ideas!)

This is comprised of one loaf cake (cut into three sections) and four mini loaves (of various heights, for interest). I used a combination of mini loaf and one of the three sections turned on its end to create the engine. They are connected with a wooden shish kabob stick. The puff of steam is squished up marshmallows on a wire. The smoke stack is two marshmallows stacked and frosted. They also have a stick to hold them up. The grid in front (which you can’t really see in this photo) is licorice whips stuck together with dark grey frosting.

The tracks, which are barely visable are licorice twists “glued” in place with the blackest frosting I could mix. I liked the size of the mini peppermint patties for the wheels with MnM type candies stuck in the middle with chocolate frosting.

The ground cover is a stripe of grey and a stripe of green frosting for a base with chocolate rocks and shredded coconut that I shook in a baggy with green food coloring. I like the texture that the realish looking rocks and grass gives.
