My friend’s daughter was getting married and I was called upon to make the bridal shower cake. The mother of the bride and bride didn’t have an idea of what they wanted. I thought about something unique and asked about a dress cake. They said sure and I ran with the idea.
The bottom of the dress was baked in a glass bowl and the top dress form was modeled from fondant and gum paste. The top set for a day to harden and then was painted black with black food coloring. The dress idea was pretty simple white it being a ballroom type dress. Rolled the fondant out and cut in a half moon shape. It was draped around the bottom and seemed to fell into place. The top was wrapped around and then I rolled out small fondant strips to create the laced back. The flowers on the base of the cake are gum paste and I purchased those…not that skilled yet.
The cake was a hit and everyone wanted to know if the dress was edible…yes it was.
