I got my inspiration for this construction cake from a friend who’d made a similar one. I just made a basic chocolate cake recipe and I used an online guide to cut the pieces of cake and join to make the ‘3’. “How to make number cakes” by H. Harris seems to be a popular one to use. Very handy!
I just used a normal butter cream icing with cocoa. I used a yellow gel icing pen for the road marking lines. My daughter really wanted some diggers etc. to play with as her uncle owned some for his forestry work. So we bought some in secret and she got these as a gift with the cake. I used choc coated raisins for the rubble and smashed part of the cake at one end for the bulldozer. I made the road cone out of red paper and sticky tape. She loved this cake!
