I made this music cake for my pastor’s wife. Yes, she was “13” because she is a leap year baby so our church threw her a 13th birthday party! She is also our music director and plays the piano, which is why I went with the music theme.
The top tier was made of 2 6-in cakes, and the bottom tier was 2 10-in cakes. After stacking the tiers, I “dirty iced” them. Then after giving it a little time to dry, I put a smooth layer of white icing on the top of the bottom tier. I then used a straight edge to make lines for the piano keys and piped the black keys using tip #3. I used a diamond shaped cookie cutter to mark the side of the bottom tier for the design and then piped in stars using tip #16.
I piped a small black border using tip #14 just so it would look a little neater. For the top tier, I used tip #3 to pipe the music notes, which are the actual notes for the “Happy Birthday” song. I then piped the lettering on top using tips #7 and #10 and piped stars all over using tip #16.
