I started this owl birthday cake by making two 11″x15″ chocolate sheet cakes and then leveled and layered them. I made a template from poster board to cut out the owl shape and then used that to cut out the cake. I iced it with chocolate butter cream and then made some homemade chocolate fondant. I lightened a small portion with some regular white fondant and cut a triangular strip for the belly.
I then rolled out the rest of the chocolate fondant and cut out the section that went over the belly. Using the white fondant, I cut out the eyes. I used some of my kids’ bowls to get the right size and shape. I tinted a small amount with sky blue gel to make the eyes and tinted some of the chocolate with black to make the pupils (I also used this for the branch and the little eyelashes). I tinted another chunk of white fondant with lemon yellow to make the beak and feet, which I molded by hand.
I tinted some using rose for the bow and then rolled some of that out for the lettering. I cut the letters out with some cookie cutters. The numbers were cut out of the chocolate fondant, with pink fondant background. Then I piped the outline details with chocolate icing using tip #3. This was also used on the letters. The leaves were cut out with the large rose leaf cutter from the Wilton gum paste flower kit.
